carafe and glasses - organic design

Rifniška karafa in kozarec

Luna narekuje zakonitosti vode in tekočin. In vino je skoraj voda. Dno in bok karafe sta oblikovana z zemeljsko silo okroglosti.

Kozarci in karafa so orodja, s katerimi odkrivamo našo duhovno in kulturno dediščino, povezano z vinom.

Rifnik carafe and wineglasses

The carafe and glasses were designed to improve the experience of enjoyment with organic wines. I designed them after noticing that wine develops differently according to the vessel it is poured into. These glassware products are based on organic design principles: organic materials and shape, derived from observing the nature where my family grows wine.

The glass stands crooked, sideways like our hill Rifnik, where indigenous people lived since later stone age (5.000 BC). The glass is designed to resemble a hand which was without a doubt the first receptacle people drank from. Besides different clay shards, the archeologists found only parts of two glass containers, made from glass paste around 700 BC. Green container had copper mixed in with chert, while the amber one also had iron oxide.

Around the hill Rifnik there used to be lots of glassworks, which melted chert flour in their ovens and glassblowers created different containers with their exhales. Glassware factory in Rogaška Slatina has been open since 1665, all other glassworks, however, sadly extinguished their hearths. With help from Rogaška glassworks we were able to make our plans of specially made glasses and carafe come true.

The bubbles in the wineglass are derived from organic impurities, but in the glasses they represent starry night and ignite our imagination. Quartz and rock crystal have always been connected with spirituality. In bio-dynamical farming they are used as “chert from cow horn”, which helps connect our cultural plants to the cosmos. In contrast to that, we use clay as an isolator whenever we wish to contain those energies.

When the glass softly slips into our hand, and organic wine is poured into it, the stories of wine, glassware, and us flow.

The decision whether to choose the amber or the green color of glass depends on our character and mood. Orange color is warm and the engraved cosmogram represents the processes of sun. The taste of wine becomes warm and round. In contrast, the green glass carries the story and cosmogram of water, which is the symbol of life. In the green glass, the wine focuses on the origins of life itself.

Carafe, a vessel for decanting wine, is meant to aid in waking the organic wine, which slept in a bottle. The neck of the carafe, through which the wine flows, is modeled after the moon’s orbit around the Earth. The moon dictates the laws of water and liquids on earth, and wine is almost water. The bottom part of the carafe is designed to represent the earthly roundness and massiveness. Because of the size and heft of the carafe, we hold it with one hand on the neck and the other on the bottom. When we rotate it in the direction of the earth’s rotation the wine dances between our hands and cosmically connects us with the wine.

Many thanks to the oenologist Dr. Julij Nemanič and geomant Marko Pogačnik, who evaluated and supported my design from two angles.

Glasses and carafes are tools made to discover our spiritual and cultural heritage in relation to wine.
